Coromandel International Limited, a prominent provider of agri-solutions in India, has entered into an agreement with Veolia Water Technologies and Solutions (India) Pvt. Ltd. to boost its seawater desalination capacity from 6 million litres per day (MLD) to 9 MLD. The company initially launched its 6 MLD desalination plant in 2023 to lessen its reliance on surface water and improve operational resilience. This capacity expansion aligns with Coromandel’s sustainability goals by implementing innovative and resource-efficient water solutions. The agreement was officially signed by Mr. S. Sankarasubramanian, Managing Director & CEO of Coromandel International Ltd., and Mr. Gopal Madabhushi, Senior Vice President – Business Unit Leader (India & South Asia) at Veolia, in the presence of Coromandel’s Senior Leadership team.
The collaboration will operate under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, where Coromandel will supply the required infrastructure support, while Veolia will contribute its global expertise in water treatment technology, equipment, and operations. Veolia will also manage the expanded desalination facility, ensuring long-term efficiency and sustainability. Once operational, the upgraded plant is expected to fulfill approximately 60% to 70% of Coromandel’s total water needs at its Vizag facility, significantly reducing dependence on external water sources and enhancing the company’s water resilience. Mr. S. Sankarasubramanian commented on the partnership, stating that it reflects a mutual vision for sustainable transformation within industrial ecosystems.
He emphasized that this initiative bolsters Coromandel’s leadership in responsible manufacturing and confirms its dedication to environmental stewardship and effective resource management. This expansion further reinforces Coromandel’s overarching environmental vision to connect business growth with sustainable infrastructure. By enhancing its water self-sufficiency, Coromandel aims to protect its operations from future water shortages while establishing a standard for sustainable practices in the Indian agri-inputs and manufacturing sectors.
