Thiruvananthapuram, May 12 (). The Crime Branch of the Kerala Police on Friday took over the investigation into the murder of a woman doctor on duty at the Government Kottarakara Hospital.
Vandana Das (22) was stabbed multiple times by 42-year-old alleged drug addict Sandeep and also injured himself.
The incident took place around 4 am on Thursday in the presence of police officials, when Sandeep started attacking people with a surgical knife.
The Kerala government handed over the probe to the crime branch on Friday morning.
On Friday, the state High Court also pulled up the police over its inaction.
Taking suo motu cognizance of the incident, the High Court observed that police officers have a duty to protect citizens even at the cost of their own lives.
The court said, so far as the incident in question is concerned, there can be no doubt that the killing of a young doctor by a person in the custody of the police – whether as an accused or in any other capacity, points to a systemic failure. does. Police should protect the citizens even at the cost of their lives.
The court said, it is the duty of the police to provide security to the doctors who are serving the people.
