Delhi High Court sentences two PWD officers to jail for disobeying orders

New Delhi, May 30 (). The Delhi High Court has sent two employees of the Public Works Department (PWD) to jail for defying the orders issued by it and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding protection of trees.

The court was hearing a contempt petition filed by the New Delhi Nature Society against two officialsengineer-in-chief and executive engineerwho were held guilty of contempt in the same case last year.

The court said, should this order not be modified or stayed, then at the expiry of ten weeks, the contemnors shall present themselves before the Registrar General of this Court, so that they may be remanded to judicial custody .

The court was informed that the installation of cable and pipeline lines by BSES Rajdhani around Bipin Chandra Marg and Chittaranjan Park has damaged the roots of several trees and by doing so, the authorities have violated the orders passed by the High Court and the Green Panel.
