National crush Rashmika Mandanna and talented actor Dheekshith Shetty are coming together for the heartfelt love story ‘The Girlfriend’, directed by Rahul Ravindran and produced by Dheeraj Mogilineni and Vidya Koppineedi under Geetha Arts and Dheeraj Mogilineni Entertainment, with a presentation by Allu Aravind. The film is set to release in Hindi and Telugu on November 7, followed by Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada versions on November 14. In an exclusive interview, Dheekshith discussed his journey, his chemistry with Rashmika, and why ‘The Girlfriend’ is significant to him. “After ‘Dasara’, this was the next big opportunity that came my way,” Dheekshith shared. “Director Rahul Ravindran approached me for ‘The Girlfriend’.
He mentioned that Rashmika was the female lead and wanted me to play the boyfriend. He had seen my interviews for Dasara and felt I was a perfect fit. Once I read the script, I understood why. Stories like ‘The Girlfriend’ are uncommon—that’s why I had to take part in it.” Speaking about the director’s vision, Dheekshith noted, “Rahul had a clear understanding of how Vikram should be portrayed—his behavior, body language, and tone. This clarity made it easier for me to perform. Vikram has many dimensions. Some might perceive him as a toxic boyfriend after watching the trailer, but Rahul ensured he didn’t come off as negative. With my background in stage and film school, I prepared thoroughly.
For me, a film should connect personally through its narrative—that’s what truly matters.” Reflecting on the film’s themes, he added, “Typically, love stories are presented in a specific manner, but ‘The Girlfriend’ examines romance from a unique angle. It’s not merely entertainment—it resonates long after leaving the theater. While larger-than-life films can be enjoyable, this one feels authentic. Rashmika mentioned that had she watched a film like this years ago, it would have altered her perspective on life. I believe audiences aged 18 to 25 will discover something valuable in it.” Commending his co-star, Dheekshith expressed, “After witnessing Rashmika’s performance, I genuinely felt that no one else could have embodied Bhuma’s character as she did.
Even when ‘Animal’ became a hit during our filming, she remained humble and approachable. You won’t see Rashmika—you’ll see Bhuma.” Discussing the film’s broader appeal, he stated, “This film isn’t solely for young people—families will connect with it too. It delves into emotions and forms of toxicity we often overlook. Rahul Ravindran is a compassionate director who brings out the best in everyone.” With a smile, Dheekshith recalled, “Allu Aravind Garu once reviewed the rushes, called me in, and I felt nervous. However, he praised my performance and even provided me an advance for my next project.
That boosted my confidence immensely.” Regarding his future endeavors, he revealed, “My Kannada film ‘Bank of Bhagyalakshmi’ is set for a Telugu release on November 21. Additionally, I have ‘Shabana’, ‘KJQ’, and a Malayalam film ‘Angel No.1’ on the way.” He concluded, “Honestly, ‘The Girlfriend’ is the best film I’ve worked on to date. It’s not just a love story—it’s an emotional journey that feels authentic, raw, and profoundly relatable.”
