Preparation:
Ingredients:
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1 tablespoon olive oil, plus extra for greasing
- Butter or ghee, for brushing (optional)
- Garlic, chopped cilantro, or sesame seeds for topping (optional)
Method:
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the yogurt, warm milk, and olive oil.
- Form Dough: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough begins to form.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle in a little more flour.
- Rest Dough: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rest in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat Pan: Heat a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
- Shape Naan: Punch down the dough and divide it into 6-8 equal pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll each piece into a tear-shaped or round naan about 1/4 inch thick.
- Cook Naan: Place one naan in the hot skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbles start to form and the bottom is golden brown. Flip and cook the other side for another 1-2 minutes. Repeat with the remaining dough.
- Optional Toppings: While the naan is still warm, you can brush it with melted butter or ghee and sprinkle with garlic, chopped cilantro, or sesame seeds if desired.
- Serve: Serve the naan warm with your favorite curries or dips.
