India Achieves First AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup Qualification

The Indian football team made a stunning comeback to defeat Uzbekistan 2-1 and secure their first qualification for the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup on Friday. India rallied after trailing, thanks to a key first-half substitution by head coach Joakim Alexandersson, who brought on Thandamoni Baskey for Bonifilia Shullai in the 40th minute. Baskey equalized in the 55th minute and assisted Anushka Kumari in the 66th minute, allowing India to turn the match in their favor after Shakhzoda Alikhonova had given Uzbekistan the lead in the 38th minute.

This victory placed India at the top of Group G with six points, securing their spot in the AFC tournament in China next year, marking their first-ever continental qualification at this age level. The Young Tigresses last participated in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup in 2005, when 11 teams were directly involved. While India only needed a draw to secure their place in China, Uzbekistan initially took control of the match, testing the Indian defense on their left flank. India, however, relied on counter-attacks, with Anushka Kumari attempting a volley from outside the box that was easily saved by Uzbekistan goalkeeper Mariya Khalkulova.

Nevertheless, Kumari displayed quick thinking by reclaiming the ball from a defender, cutting inside, and scoring at the near post.
