New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes has announced a further extension of the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 from September 15 (Monday) to September 16 (Tuesday), as stated in a notification. The official account of the Income Tax Department, Income Tax India, posted on X late on Monday night: “KIND ATTENTION TAXPAYERS! The due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26, originally due on July 31, 2025, was extended to September 15, 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has now decided to extend this deadline to September 16, 2025.
To facilitate changes in the utilities, the e-filing portal will be under maintenance from 12:00 AM to 02:30 AM on September 16, 2025.” Earlier on Monday, the Income Tax Department reported that over 7 crore income tax returns had already been filed for AY 2025-26 as the September 15 deadline approached. In a post on the social media platform X, the Department expressed gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for contributing to this achievement and encouraged those who have not yet filed their returns to do so promptly. “More than 7 crore ITRs have been filed so far and still counting.
We thank taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this milestone, and we urge all those who haven’t filed ITR for AY 2025-26 to proceed with their filing,” it stated. The Department also assured taxpayers of around-the-clock assistance for filing returns, making tax payments, and accessing other related services. “Our helpdesk operates 24×7, providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and Twitter/X,” it added. This clarification followed a day after the Department refuted rumors regarding another extension of the deadline. Previously, on Sunday, it labeled reports suggesting that the due date was pushed to September 30 as “fake news,” reiterating that September 15 remains the final date.
“Fake news is circulating claiming that the due for filing ITRs (originally due on July 31, 2025, and extended to September 15, 2025) has been further extended to September 30, 2025,” the Department stated on Sunday. “The due date for filing ITRs remains September 15, 2025. Taxpayers are advised to rely solely on official @IncomeTaxIndia updates,” it added. Earlier in May, the government had already extended the deadline for non-audit cases from July 31 to September 15 for AY 2025-26. The Department noted that the increase in ITR filings indicates improved tax compliance and a growing taxpayer base in the country.
