Justice Kant emphasizes judiciary's duty to protect the underprivileged

Ranchi: Chief Justice of India-designate Justice Surya Kant on Saturday emphasized that the role of the judiciary extends beyond merely resolving disputes; it must also safeguard the rights of the underprivileged and the marginalized. Speaking as the chief guest at the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Jharkhand High Court, Justice Surya Kant stated, “Justice is for all — this is the fundamental message of the Constitution.

Equality and transparency are vital prerequisites of the judicial system, ensuring that justice is accessible to everyone.” At the beginning of the event, he paid homage to tribal leader and freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda on his 150th birth anniversary, remarking, “Bhagwan Birsa belongs to all of us and will always remain so.” Justice Surya Kant underscored the significant role of the High Court, describing it as a bridge between the Supreme Court and district courts, crucial for protecting the rights of citizens in Jharkhand. He congratulated the Jharkhand High Court on reaching its 25-year milestone and expressed confidence in its ongoing commitment to upholding strong judicial traditions.

Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal, the special guest, commended the High Court’s efforts in providing prompt and accessible justice. He urged the judiciary to adapt to technological advancements in the age of AI and IT and proposed that the High Court create a roadmap for its Golden Jubilee. He also reassured advocates that the Central Government would consider the request for establishing a Central Administrative Tribunal bench in Ranchi. In his welcome address, Jharkhand HC’s Chief Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan reflected on the state’s rich history and the High Court’s progress over the past 25 years.

During the event, Justice Surya Kant launched the District Judiciary of Jharkhand mobile application and released the High Court’s souvenir “Pragati.”
