Mumbai, March 29 (). In an unusual surgery, doctors removed a 100-gram hair strand from the abdomen of a 10-year-old girl living in Dadar. The child had a habit of pulling hair and swallowing.
Baby Kiara Bansal, who was suffering from a strange disorder called Trichophagia. This case was linked to hair eating trichotillomania. When she suffered from severe pain, she was brought to the children’s hospital in Parel- Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital.
Pediatric surgeon Parag Karkera did a clinical examination and felt that there was a lump in the girl’s abdomen.
We did a CT-scan, which showed a trichobezoar or a mass of hairs in the stomach and some part of the mass was going into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, said Karkera.
He said, since the hair does not dissolve in the stomach, it remains in the digestive tract and then turns into a ball or mass, which continues to grow, although this is rarely seen in children.
The medical team performed a two-hour surgery to remove the hair tuft from Kiara’s abdomen. The health of the girl child is improving now.
Karkera said that even Kiara’s parents were not aware of her habit, but if not treated on time, complications such as intestinal obstruction, perforation of the intestine or abdominal wall and small intestine could result.
