Nalanda University Honors Raja Rsabhadeva's Philosophical Legacy

Nalanda University hosted a significant seminar titled “Nālandā Dialogues on Rājā Ṛṣabhadeva’s Tradition: Culture, Civilization, Community” on Monday at its Rajgir campus. The event commenced with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, fostering a respectful and spiritual ambiance. During the inauguration, Vice Chancellor Prof. Sachin Chaturvedi characterized Rājā Ṛṣabhadeva as the first philosopher in history, noting that his concepts continue to influence contemporary discussions on ethics, knowledge, and society. The opening panel included insights from Prof. Abhay Kumar Singh, Jainesh Shah, and keynote speaker Dr. B. K. Tiwary, who established an academic framework for the day by emphasizing the enduring impact of Ṛṣabhadeva’s teachings on civilizations over time. Their reflections encouraged attendees to consider the significance of ancient wisdom in today’s context.

The seminar’s second segment comprised three in-depth sessions. The first session addressed Ṛṣabhadeva’s historical and civilizational impact, featuring presentations from scholars like Dr. Lata Bothara, Dr. Pranshu Samdarshi, Prof. Abhay Kumar Singh, and Dr. Tosabanta Padhan. The second session explored the structure of early Indian society and governance as depicted in Bhartiya Śāstras, with speakers Prof. Venus Jain, Dr. Sejal Shah, and Dr. Azad Hind Gulshan Nanda discussing the evolution of customs and institutions rooted in Ṛṣabhadeva’s cultural memory. The third session focused on Ṛṣabhadeva’s ethical and philosophical contributions, with speakers Varun Jain, Arpit Shah, and Shreyansh Jain addressing themes such as pilgrimage traditions, moral frameworks, and institutional ethics.

The seminar concluded with a valedictory address by Upādhyāya Yaśa Jī Mahārāj from Veerayatan, Rajgir, led by Prof. Godabarisha Mishra, reflecting the cooperative spirit of the event. Dr. Pranshu Samdarshi expressed appreciation to all speakers, organizers, and participants during the Vote of Thanks. Local school students participated in the program as part of the Sahbhāgita initiative, adding a community-focused aspect. Nalanda University reiterated its dedication to advancing research in Jaina philosophy, culture, and history. Through such academic events, the University aims to inspire deeper learning, promote interdisciplinary scholarship, and preserve India’s intellectual legacy for future generations.
