New Delhi: Amid increasing criticism, NCERT is facing backlash over its modules concerning the partition. The Indian History Congress (IHC), one of the largest associations of professional historians with over 9,000 members, has accused the council of “spreading falsehood with a clear communal intent.” In a comprehensive statement, the historians claimed that NCERT’s new Partition Horrors Remembrance Day modules distort history by placing blame on the Congress and the Muslim League while exonerating British colonial rulers. “The most objectionable part is that this distorted polarizing history is being fed to the tender minds of school-going children,” the statement remarked.
The NCERT modules—designed for Classes VI–VIII and IX–XII—identify the “Culprits of Partition” as Jinnah, who demanded it; the Congress, which accepted it; and Mountbatten, who formalized and implemented it. They also assert that the British “tried their best to preserve India as one until the end.” The IHC criticized this portrayal, arguing that it misrepresents historical facts. “Turning history completely upside down, the modules hold not only the Muslim League but also the Indian National Congress responsible for the Partition of the country. Aligning with the loyalist perspective of communal forces during the freedom struggle, the British colonial rulers are absolved in these modules,” the resolution stated.
