Bhubaneswar, May 13 (). Odisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate Dipali Das on Saturday won the Jharsuguda assembly bypoll with a huge margin.
BJD’s Deepali Das won the by-election by a margin of 48,721 votes over her nearest rival Tankadhar Tripathi of BJP.
As per the results declared by the Election Commission, BJD got 1,07,198 votes while BJP got 58,477 votes. Congress candidate Tarun Pandey got only 4,496 votes and his deposit was forfeited.
In the bypoll held on May 10, 79.21 percent of the total 2.21 lakh voters exercised their franchise. The bypoll was necessitated after the assassination of sitting MLA and then health minister Naba Kishore Das on January 29 this year.
In the 2019 assembly elections, the BJD secured 98,620 votes while the BJP and the Congress got 52,921 and 18,823 votes, respectively.
In this by-election, the vote share of both BJD and BJP increased by about five percent and three percent respectively, while the vote share of Congress decreased by about eight percent.
Dipali got 8,578 votes more than her father late Naba Das and the victory margin also increased by 3,022 votes.
Meanwhile, BJD workers and leaders are celebrating the victory at party office Shankha Bhavan here and Jharsuguda.
