Bhubaneswar, June 3 (). Hundreds of local youth queue up at hospitals to donate blood for the injured victims of the devastating train tragedy in Odisha’s Balasore district.
As news of the accident that took place on Friday evening spread, youths queued up overnight at the Balasore district headquarter hospital and Bhadrak to donate blood.
As per the latest information, more than 260 people have been confirmed dead and more than 900 injured in the gruesome train accident near Bahanaga station. The accident derailed 17 coaches of Coromandel Express and SMVT-Howrah Super Fast Express.
A young man standing in the queue said, “We (about 25 volunteers) have come here to Balasore hospital to voluntarily donate blood.” If our blood can save someone’s life, then there can be no greater happiness than this.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik visited Balasore Hospital and interacted with the injured passengers.
He thanked the local people and the administration for saving so many lives.
Patnaik told media persons, I am extremely saddened by this train accident. I would like to thank the local people and the local team who worked through the night to rescue people from the debris.
Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena thanked the young volunteers for donating blood in such sad times.
500 units of blood collected overnight here in Balasore,” Jena said in a tweet. Currently 900 units in stock. This will help in the treatment of accident victims. I am personally indebted and grateful to all the volunteers who have donated blood for a noble cause.
