Hyderabad, April 16 (). AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance of the murder of former MP Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Uttar Pradesh and set up an investigation team.
The Hyderabad MP said officials from Uttar Pradesh should not be part of the probe team to ensure a fair probe.
Owaisi told media persons that there was a need for a thorough and time-bound investigation to bring out the facts like who gave the weapons to the killers, who sent them and how they reached there. Till this is not done, the killings will continue, he said.
Gangster-turned-politician Ateeq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead when police were taking them to a hospital in Prayagraj for medical examination. During this, the assailants who came as TV reporters shot him from point blank range.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president demanded that all police officers guarding Atiq Ahmed and his brother should be dismissed from service under Article 311 of the Constitution.
He said that the former MP had gone to the Supreme Court saying that there was a threat to his life and the court had said that it was the responsibility of the state to protect him in judicial custody.
Terming it as a heinous murder, Owaisi said that not only Muslims, all those who believe in the Constitution and the rule of law are now feeling insecure.
Owaisi said that ever since the BJP came to power in Uttar Pradesh, there is no rule of law but rule of gun in the state.
Stating that there is no compassion or humanity among those in power, he demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The Chief Minister should take responsibility for this, he said. He had said in the state assembly that I will mix it in the soil. Should the Chief Minister of the country’s largest state use the same language?
The MP said that this incident also reflects the growing fundamentalism of the majority. Look at the way he used his weapons, he said. They raised religious slogans. Aren’t they terrorists?
To those celebrating the killings sitting in TV studios, Owaisi said, they are forgetting that today BJP is in power but tomorrow there will be some other party. It won’t stop.
Owaisi said that the assailants who attacked his car during the Uttar Pradesh assembly election campaign had fired in a similar manner and raised religious slogans.
Asked whether he feared an attack on him, the MP said he was not scared and would continue to tour Uttar Pradesh to do his party’s work. He said, I am ready to die. What is bound to happen will happen but I will not stop.
