New Delhi, May 21 (). Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi on his 32nd death anniversary.
In a tweet, Modi, who is on a visit to Japan to attend the G7 summit, said, “I pay tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi ji on his death anniversary.”
Earlier, Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) President Sonia Gandhi, party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid floral tributes to the former Prime Minister at Veer Bhoomi in Delhi.
Rajiv Gandhi was born on August 20, 1944 and represented the Amethi parliamentary constituency of Uttar Pradesh four times.
Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi served as the sixth Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989. He assumed office in 1984 following the assassination of his mother, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
On May 21, 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by suicide bombers of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. He was cremated at Veer Bhoomi, situated on the banks of the Yamuna River.
His death anniversary is observed as National Anti-Terrorism Day.
He was the youngest Prime Minister of India who came to power at the age of just 40.
