Umar Khalid Asserts No Evidence Ties Him to Riots in Supreme Court

Student activist Umar Khalid, seeking bail in the UAPA case related to the February 2020 riots in Delhi, informed the Supreme Court on Friday that no evidence links him to the violence, refuting conspiracy allegations. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Khalid, stated before Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria that there has been no recovery of funds, weapons, or any material evidence associating him with the 2020 Delhi riots. “There are 751 FIRs, and I am implicated in only one; if this is a conspiracy, it is rather surprising!” Sibal remarked. He emphasized that Khalid was not in Delhi during the riots and highlighted that no funds, weapons, or physical evidence have been discovered connecting him to the violence.

He also pointed out that no witness statement directly links the petitioner to any violent act. Sibal argued that Khalid deserves bail based on parity, as fellow activists Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita, and Asif Iqbal Tanha received bail in June 2021.
