Kuala Lumpur: India and the United States have formalized a framework agreement aimed at enhancing defence collaboration over the next decade. This pact was unveiled following discussions between US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Kuala Lumpur. The agreement is intended to improve “coordination, information sharing, and technology cooperation” while fostering “regional stability and deterrence,” as stated by Hegseth on X. This development occurs as both nations strive to finalize a trade agreement and navigate strained relations after former US President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on India, which included a 25% penalty for purchasing Russian oil and arms. The pact is anticipated to guide the comprehensive scope of the India-US defence relationship.
“It signifies our increasing strategic alignment and will usher in a new decade of collaboration. Defence will remain a key pillar in our bilateral ties. Our partnership is vital for ensuring a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region,” Singh mentioned in a post on X. Pramit Pal Chaudhuri from the Eurasia Group think tank noted that the agreement was initially expected to be finalized in July-August, but was delayed due to India’s dissatisfaction with Trump’s comments regarding his involvement in resolving the Pakistan conflict. This pact continues a trend of agreements that have facilitated greater interoperability between the two militaries, allowed India access to advanced technology, and enabled collaboration in their defence sectors, Chaudhuri added.
“This opens further possibilities in all three areas,” he remarked.
