Late Night Screen Time May Harm Your Blood Sugar Levels

Patna: Health experts caution that using phones or digital screens late at night can significantly elevate the risk of high blood sugar and type 2 diabetes, as blue light disrupts the body’s hormonal balance and sleep cycle. Diabetes, a chronic metabolic condition, arises when the body cannot adequately manage blood glucose due to insufficient insulin production or improper insulin utilization. Experts indicate that lifestyle choices, particularly poor sleep caused by excessive screen time, are increasingly significant contributors to the growing prevalence of the disease. Blue light’s impact on glucose regulation is concerning. Engaging with smartphones, tablets, or laptops before bedtime exposes the eyes to blue light, which inhibits melatonin—the hormone that regulates sleep.

As melatonin levels decrease, the body becomes more alert, resulting in an increase in cortisol, the stress hormone. Elevated cortisol levels affect the body’s ability to process glucose, which could lead to impaired insulin response, higher blood sugar levels, and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Sleep researchers warn that chronic disruption of the sleep-wake cycle may subject the body to ongoing stress, complicating glucose regulation further. Melatonin is crucial as it signals the body to prepare for sleep. Blue light misleads the brain into thinking it is still daytime, hindering melatonin production and decreasing sleep quality. Inadequate sleep has been shown to impair insulin function, making it harder for the body to manage glucose.

Research from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases indicates that chronic sleep deprivation can elevate blood sugar levels and disrupt metabolic functions. A study published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe revealed that exposure to light at night raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, even in individuals who get sufficient sleep. The researchers concluded that artificial light keeps the nervous system alert, increasing stress hormones and blood sugar. Medical professionals note that individuals who frequently spend extended periods on screens at night may develop poor insulin sensitivity, raising their risk of obesity, diabetes, and conditions like PCOS.

Women may face hormonal imbalances and fertility challenges, while men may experience decreased testosterone levels or sexual health issues associated with poor sleep patterns.
