Chennai, March 30 (). Tamil Nadu Police has arrested seven people, including a minor, for allegedly forcing a woman to remove her hijab at the Vellore Fort Complex in the state.
Vellore SP S. Rajesh Kannan told that seven people have been arrested on charges of intentionally insulting and defaming.
The SP further said that the accused acted against personal liberty. The arrested accused have been identified as Santosh, Imran Pasha, Mohd Faisal, Ibrahim Basha, Mohd Faisal and C. Prashant. The arrested minor has been sent to the juvenile home. Police said most of those arrested are local auto rickshaw drivers.
According to the police, the incident took place on the afternoon of March 27 when a hijab-clad woman reached the fort with a friend. The arrested people also reached here and asked her to remove her hijab. One of them shot the incident on phone and uploaded it on a social media platform which went viral.
The case was registered by the Vellore North police on a complaint given by the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) on Wednesday. Police formed five special teams on Thursday and arrested the criminals. Seven people were arrested on charges of endangering public safety, endangering personal liberty, intending to create enmity between two classes of people and acting against the modesty of women.
Police has instructed people not to share the video clipping on social media platforms. Those doing so will be charged under the Tamil Nadu Harassment of Women Prohibition Act and the Information Technology (IT) Act. Vellore Superintendent of Police said that further investigation is underway.
