Tamil Nadu: DMK, others vying to take credit for Supreme Court nod to Jallikattu

Chennai, May 18 (). Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK, AIADMK and BJP are on Thursday seen competing to claim credit for the Supreme Court allowing the bull-taming sport Jallikattu.

Justice K.M. Joseph said this would not hinder the legislature’s view, as he believes sports is part of the state’s cultural heritage.

The top court said that when the legislature has declared that Jallikattu is part of Tamil Nadu’s cultural heritage, the judiciary cannot take a different view. He also emphasized that the most appropriate place to decide this is the legislature.

The bench also noted that the traditional sport of bull-taming has been going on in Tamil Nadu since the last century.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said in a tweet, the decision of the five-member bench of the Supreme Court is historic.

Stalin also said that a big Jallikattu ground is being built at Aringanallur.

We will celebrate Jallikattu in a big way during the next Pongal, he added.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Law Minister S. Raghupathi said in a statement on Thursday that there is no cruelty to bulls, Tamil Nadu government is ensuring the safety of bulls.

He also said that the five-judge bench of the Supreme Court was unanimous in the judgment and that the Tamil Nadu government had engaged the best lawyers to appear in the case and put forth the arguments effectively.

AIADMK leader and former minister C. Vijayabaskar told the media here that Jallikattu was banned in 2011 by the previous UPA government.

He said that the ordinance to restart Jallikattu was brought during the AIADMK rule and Jallikattu resumed in the state after three years.

He also said that the AIADMK government had made continuous efforts before the Supreme Court to restart Jallikattu.

Meanwhile, BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit president K.K. Welcoming the apex court’s decision, Annamalai said, “On behalf of the state unit of BJP and the people of Tamil Nadu, we thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his persistent efforts.” The ban on Tamil Nadu’s cultural sport Jallikattu was completely lifted.

He also said that it was the previous Congress-led UPA government, which banned Jallikattu.

Annamalai said the ban was lifted in Tamil Nadu due to the efforts of the BJP and the NDA government.
