Guwahati, April 24 (). Two members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI), who have been evading arrest since September 2022, have been arrested from Assam’s Dhubri district. The police gave this information on Monday.
The arrested people have been identified as Shafiqul Islam and Saiful Islam. According to sources, he recently returned to his home after being absconding for a long time.
The police launched a covert operation on the basis of a tip-off and both were arrested on Monday morning. Shafiqul Islam was taken into custody from Bagulamari area of Dhubri city. During interrogation, he gave information about his accomplice Saiful Islam, who was eventually taken into custody.
The police claimed that Shafikul and Saiful were promoting anti-national ideas among children while working as teachers at the Dhubri madrasa. Speaking to , Inspector General (Law and Order) of Assam Police, Prashant Kumar Bhuiyan said that , He is keeping a close watch on the activities of PFI and some of the top members of the banned group have been detained recently.
“Our team searched the area and detained two PFI workers from Dhubri,” he said. He had just reached Assam from another nearby state. He is being questioned and we are probing the entire situation.
Two members of the PFI and a leader of its student wing Campus Front of India were detained from Assam’s Barpeta district earlier this month. Police seized cash, some equipment, bank accounts and documents from their possession.
