According to the police, sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to intimidate public), 332 ( Voluntarily deterring public servant from his duty, causing hurt), 352 (Assault or criminal force except with grave provocation), 147 (Riot) and 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence) Common Objection of Prosecution and Section 3 of Damages An FIR has been registered at Sansad Marg police station under the Two Public Property Act.
All the women protesters, including detained wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Sangeeta Phogat, were released late on Sunday evening.
Around 14 protesters from Najafgarh who were detained from Janpath were released around 10 pm and 16 protesters including Palam khap president Surendra Solanki were released from Vasant Vihar police station around 10.30 pm.
The Sarva Khap Mahapanchayat and the protesting wrestlers had on Sunday called for a Mahila Panchayat outside the newly built Parliament House in Delhi to draw the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the victimized Olympian wrestlers when he comes to inaugurate them.
Last week, in the Khap Mahapanchayat organized in Haryana’s Meham town in support of the protesting wrestlers, it was decided that women from all over the country would participate in the panchayat to be held on Sunday outside the newly constructed Parliament House.
Tension escalated after Vinesh Phogat, her sister Sangeeta Phogat and other wrestlers tried to break through security barricades after they were stopped from marching towards the new Parliament building.
This led to a scuffle between the protesters and the police officers. When they sat on the road to protest, they were dragged away and put in a police van. During this, all the wrestlers including Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and their supporters were taken into custody and kept in different police stations.
Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal on Sunday condemned the manhandling of protesting wrestlers by the city police and demanded the immediate arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accused of sexual harassment. The strike of these wrestlers at Jantar Mantar was going on since 23rd April itself.
Maliwal also demanded action against the officials responsible for detaining them.
Thousands of police personnel along with paramilitary forces were deployed in border areas including Tikri, Ghazipur, Singhu and Badarpur borders.
The police had made a formal request to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) seeking permission to set up a temporary jail at MC Primary Girls School, Kanjhawala Chowk, Old Bawana. This request was made to maintain the law and order situation, however, it was rejected by the Mayor of Delhi, Shelly Oberoi.
