11 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Coast Guard returned

Chennai, April 17 (). Eleven fishermen from Tamil Nadu, arrested by the Sri Lankan Coast Guard, returned home on Monday. The fishermen from Pudukottai, Nagapattinam and Karaikal who ventured into the sea were arrested by the Sri Lankan Coast Guard on March 22 for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

The mechanized boat of these fishermen was also seized by the Sri Lankan Coast Guard. After this 11 fishermen were put in jail in Sri Lanka.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had requested the Center to intervene in the matter and bring the fishermen back to India. The 11 fishermen were then handed over to Indian Embassy officials who arranged visas and flight tickets and brought them back to Chennai this morning.

Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department officials received the 11 fishermen and made arrangements for their transportation to return to their native villages.
