Ingredients for AkkaMasoor Dal (Red Lentil Curry):
- 1 cup red lentils (akkimasoor)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1-inch piece ginger, chopped
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
- Salt to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
- 1.5 cups water
For the Tadka:
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 10 cloves garlic, chopped
- 8-10 curry leaves
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- 3 dried red chilies
Method for AkkaMasoor Dal (Red Lentil Curry):
- Wash the Lentils: Rinse the red lentils thoroughly under running water to remove any impurities.
- Pressure Cook: Add the washed lentils to a pressure cooker along with the chopped onion, tomato, green chilies, garlic, ginger, coriander leaves, salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala powder, and water.
- Cook: Pressure cook for 4 whistles on medium heat.
- Prepare the Tadka: Heat oil in a small pan. Add the garlic cloves, curry leaves, cumin seeds, and asafoetida. Fry until the garlic turns golden brown. Add the dried red chilies and fry for a few more seconds.
- Combine and Serve: Once the pressure cooker releases its pressure, open the lid and stir the lentil curry. Pour the prepared tadka over the lentil curry. Adjust the consistency with water as needed. Serve hot with rice or roti.
