Mumbai businessman defrauded of Rs 58 crore in digital scam

A 72-year-old businessman involved in stock trading lost Rs 58 crore in a cyber scam where he and his wife were falsely placed under ‘digital arrest’ by criminals impersonating ED and CBI officials who threatened them with prosecution for money laundering. Police state this might be the largest sum someone has lost due to fear of legal action. Authorities have apprehended three individuals who fabricated documents, posed as government officials during video calls, and employed fake credentials to persuade the victim that he was under investigation for money laundering. They coerced him into transferring money to various bank accounts over a two-month period starting in August this year.

The suspects received Rs 25 lakh in each of their personal accounts, according to a senior police officer.
