Nothing OS 4.0 Beta Introduces New Features for Phone 3a Series

Nothing, the UK-based smartphone brand co-founded by Carl Pei, has begun the rollout of the Open Beta version of its latest operating system, Nothing OS 4.0, for the Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro. This update showcases a combination of new design elements and functionality, reflecting the company’s evolving software vision. A key feature of this update is Lock Glimpse, which enhances the user’s lock screen experience. This feature showcases a rotating selection of high-quality wallpapers across nine curated categories, providing users with an aesthetically pleasing and personalized experience each time they unlock their device. Users can swipe left on the lock screen to access Lock Glimpse, which is off by default.

Notably, Nothing assures users that this feature is completely optional and does not collect any personal data. Future updates may allow users to substitute default wallpapers with their own images, adding a personal flair to their devices. In a blog post, co-founder Akis Evangelidis stated, “We aim to integrate features in the most optimal way, while keeping everything under the user’s control.” He stressed that Nothing’s approach to software balances functionality, simplicity, and user privacy. In a significant change, Nothing is testing curated third-party apps on select non-flagship devices, which deviates from its previous commitment to a minimal, bloatware-free experience.

Evangelidis explained that this move is a strategically planned effort to enhance device appeal while keeping costs low without sacrificing performance. The selected apps, including Instagram, are chosen based on their relevance and popularity, with some providing additional benefits like improved camera capabilities or easier content sharing. Users will maintain complete control, as all pre-installed apps can be uninstalled if desired. “We operate on razor-thin margins and must make deliberate choices to deliver a high-quality user experience while remaining financially sustainable,” Evangelidis elaborated. He also discussed the challenges faced in the competitive smartphone market, where startups must manage high manufacturing costs, complex supply chains, and the influence of established brands.

“Building a new brand in a tough market requires a balance between innovation, design, and sustainability,” he noted. Nothing’s commitment to transparent communication and its engagement with the community in decision-making processes continue to shape its brand philosophy. The company confirmed it will keep users updated about future enhancements, features, and app partnerships, encouraging feedback to further refine the OS. As the Nothing OS 4.0 Beta reaches more devices, the update positions Nothing as not only a design-focused brand but also as a forward-thinking entity exploring innovative ways to connect software advancements with user autonomy.
