Kolkata, May 18 (). Officials of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police on Thursday arrested Krishnapad Bagh alias Bhanu, the main accused in the blast at an illegal firecracker factory at Egra in East Midnapore district.
He was arrested from a private nursing home in Odisha’s Cuttack, where he was admitted after being injured in the blast. Along with him, his son Prithvijit Bagh and nephew Indrajit Bagh have also been arrested.
Soon after the blast at the illegal firecracker factory on Tuesday, Bhanu along with his son and close ones fled. He was a former member of the gram panchayat in the ruling Trinamool Congress area.
State police sources said that the injuries of the arrested accused were serious. Although initially, the CID officials who arrested him thought of only shifting him to a hospital in Kolkata, the doctors treating him at Nasirg Home in Cuttack said that his condition was too critical for transfer.
“We have requested our counterparts in the Odisha Police to deploy guards and keep a constant vigil at the said nursing home so that Bhanu does not escape from the hospital under any circumstances,” said a state police official.
Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Shubhendu Adhikari has already filed a PIL in a division bench of the Calcutta High Court demanding a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the matter, which will come up for hearing on Thursday itself. The officer has requested a fast-track hearing in the matter.
The state police is being questioned as to why relevant sections under the Explosives Act have not been included in the FIR registered in the matter.
The FIR includes sections 188, 286 and 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as sections 24 and 26 of the West Bengal Fire Service Act.
